More About Doug Horning CODE 445

The farm of Doug Horning is located in Newmanstown, Pennsylvania.Doug Horning and his wife Lois both grew up on or around farms. Doug has been farming for 20 years. Before that, Doug also worked in construction and is a mason by trade. The couple has four children, all of which live at home and are home schooled, and they each help out with various activities around the farm. When Doug began farming, he raised pigs, and added laying hens in 2004 when the couple purchased the farm from their church. The farm had an existing caged laying barn but has recently been transitioned to cage-free in 2018.

The Horning’s day begins at 5:30am when they walk the barn, taking care of their hens and beef cattle and the family all begin their daily chores. The day ends around 6:30pm. The Horning’s have 120 acres, 60 acres of which are tilled with corn and beans.

The Horning farm has all veg-fed, cage-free white chickens. Doug first began working with Martin’s Eggs for commodity and is now a proud Sauder’s Egg farmer. He likes working with Sauder’s because he feels they are very supportive of their farmers and he’s had very positive interactions with the Sauder team. He knows that taking excellent care of his hens is the key to being a successful farmer.

The chickens on this farm are cage-free, meaning they are raised in a stress-free environment and are not in cages. They are kept in large heated and air-cooled growing houses where they can roost and socialize freely, participating in their chicken behaviors and pecking orders, and laying their eggs in dark, quiet nests.
